about
"American Heart" is a song about Ross Ulbricht, a young idealist sentenced to a "double life plus forty years" imprisonment for creating a deep web marketplace called "Silk Road". Inspired by the documentary "Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and the Silk Road" directed by Alex Winter. Written and sang with the intention of melting the heart of the American Court. Shared - coincidentally enough - on Valentine's Day, possibly the most American of all known celebrations.
lyrics
come gather 'round the pine tree
where folktales are told
two night birds will be singin'
a story 'bout Ross
a young bright man who made his stand
upon the Silk Road
this kid once had a vision
of sharing this world
without a fat commission
to the fathers of law
then spend his days to build that place
around the Bitcoin
he spend his nights to build that site
and called it Silk Road
next fall Dread Pirate Roberts
became his praised name
he'd speak about about unfairness
of taxing all trade
he made it clear he wanted to steer
this underground boat
and he made it dear to drown our fear
of being controlled
the silk market gathered many
from wise men to those
who'd profit from addicting
rich children to coke
so now the Pirate's done and has no fun
because of that flaw
two lifetimes for allowing us all
to go where we want
despite the obvious danger
of freedom at it's core
despite the black and heavy notes
pianos have upon their boards
he wanted men to choose without
their governments ahead of their tracks
without no shelves entitled "bad"
inside each maze to find their path
the trial was far from normal
Ross had no defence
the whole story sounds like written
by a right wing's left hand:
"A murderer's gang was caught with a bang
and now we're all saved.
This nasty bad man will never again
be a threat to our land."
but if you'd like to hear my
reflections on this
poor Ross had good intentions
all well as hell was paved with these
but nevertheless he should play chess
in Austin next spring
so let him have kids
and the him die in the arms of Liberty
the lesson in such story
is worth more than gold
there shouldn't be a power
that prohibits it all
so rather let's talk
then lock someone up
who knew this before
I hope you won't mind, American Pride
to say you were wrong
so will you be touched, American Judge
by such a sad song?
and can you trust art, American Heart
and let him go home?
tomorrow this young melody
will cross the big sea
she'll fly above those prison walls
and enter their ears
she'll visit your cell to see if you're well
and tell you she's near
I'm hopin' God knows the reason she's born
upon our pine hill
